Chapter 15

Emma

“What do you want to see first?” Julius asked, as soon as Malcolm had left her side.

Emma eyed him, unsure of how to act. How did you talk to the man you thought had been your pet just a day ago? Did she tell him he was a good boy and rub him behind his ears? She choked back her laughter at her thoughts. “Um, is there a favorite spot of yours?”

Julius’ eyes lit up, obviously having a place in mind. He stepped away from her and waved her along. “I’ll show you the best place on the entire property.”

The excitement in his expression and voice had her trailing after him. She’d expected to see more people milling about the house, but it was silent. She shouldn’t have been surprised. Vampires slept during the day, or at least stayed inside, away from the harmful UV rays. Not for the first time, she was grateful to be a night owl. She didn’t know how well she’d fit in with Malcolm and his men, but being awake when they were would help. She didn’t like the emptiness of the house and could only imagine what it would feel like with the sounds of all the people who lived and worked there. The feel of home.

Emma shook off the thoughts and rushed after Julius as he left the house.

The sun was blinding after spending so much time inside with a lack of natural light. It was warmer than it had been when Emma first arrived, but cold enough that she felt grateful to Julius for bringing along a heavy coat for their outing. Julius walked to the side of the house, his pace slow and unhurried.

Once she caught up to him, she tried to start a conversation. “So, a wolf, huh?” Emma rolled her eyes at herself.

Julius’ lips kicked up in amusement. “Yup,” he answered, playfully popping the p.

Emma giggled. “Ugh. I know.” She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. “I wasn’t sure how to start a conversation with you, as you.”

Stopping in his tracks, he turned to her. “Are you uncomfortable with me, Emma?”

“No. Not uncomfortable. I’m just not great at socializing.” When he frowned, she continued. “You were with me for weeks. How often did I speak on the phone or invite people over to my house?”

Understanding lit his eyes. “Rarely.” He sighed. “I get it, Emma. I just want you to be relaxed around me. I not only want to keep you safe, but I’d like you to think of me as a friend.”

“I get that, but it’s a little hard to relax when you know someone is out to kill you.” Thinking of Peter made her stomach sink and her hands shake. She stuffed her hands into her pockets to hide them and continued walking in the direction they had been heading, deciding she needed to change the subject. “Do you live in the house?”

Julius chuckled, following her lead now. “No. Not normally. I have a room I use occasionally, but I live with my pack.
